o My work process

Sculpture of Marco

For a commissioned piece I always work closely with clients to understand the character of your animal, then to establish the best pose and scale for your artwork. This consultation period is likely to take 2 or 3 sessions of 30 mins. We can do it via video, or in person.

Photography of your animal would then follow and this will include a 360 degree view of the selected pose.

Maquette Production

A maquette is then produced in clay. A maquette is model for a larger piece of sculpture, created in order to visualise how it might look and to work out approaches and materials for how it might be made.

Once you are happy, the maquette will be signed off.

Armature & modelling

The metal armature is then made and clay modelling commenced. An armature is a framework around which the sculpture is built, and the clay is modelled onto this.

Mould making & casting

Once the sculpture is fully resolved in clay with the client's final sign-off, your artwork is ready for the mould-making and casting process.

I use Jesmonite as my casting material due to its strength and the quality of finish. In my opinion, it is the best option! To find out more detailed information about Jesmonite see Materials & Dimensions.

Finishing

Finally, the sculpture is ready for the finishing processes, which include me adding the important paint detail that will capture your animal for many, many years to come.
