o Cast Materials & Woodwork

Wimpey Homes commissioned me to create an entrance feature for their development in Newmachar, Aberdeenshire. Conscious that the perimeter hedge that had surrounded the field had been removed, I chose to return an interpretation of it on either side of the main site entrance. Each section of ‘hedge” is hollow and created using a mould making and casting method. The resin ‘hedge’ rests on a galvanised steel ‘branch’ base and sits within a stone wall and pillar plinth.

The inspiration for the bench seating came from the immediate vicinity of the site. Crieff sits on the Highland Boundary Fault Line which led to the idea of moulten material pressing and distorting. I was able to interpret this concept to create the cubed support structures. These structures also reference the local dry stone dykes that surround the walks. One further inspiration for the single support bench was a large stone in the middle of the river. The flow of the water around the stone combined with the lines created by the ploughed fields supplied the ideas for the undulating wooden seating slats.

Working with the local primary school, the children created interpretive clay tiles in response to local stories. These tiles were cast in iron and inserted into the tops of the cubed iron supports. Lines of poetry inspired by the local stories were inscribed into the wood of the eight benches.

My idea for the sequence of signpost structures came from the natural form of a sycamore seed combined with a holly leaf and berry. The construction technique is fabricated using mild steel, galvanised and painted. The structure had to be adaptable to contain the variety of graphic designed information panels required at the multiple locations of the walk start points.
